Executive Function 101: What UGA Students Need to Know

What is executive function and why does it matter for your GPA? An intro guide for University of Georgia students seeking academic coaching.

Executive function is the set of mental skills you use to get from intention to action: planning, starting, holding information in mind, switching, and managing your own attention and emotion under pressure. It's not intelligence, and it's not character. It's a skill set — which means it can be built and supported.

The skills that show up most in college

Task initiation — actually starting. Working memory — holding a lecture's thread while taking notes. Planning and sequencing — turning "write the paper" into steps with an order. Time management — estimating and tracking how long things take. Cognitive flexibility — changing plans when the week doesn't cooperate. Emotional regulation — staying functional when a grade lands badly.

    Why college exposes the gaps

High school supplies structure: fixed hours, daily contact with teachers, parents nearby, frequent small deadlines. College removes almost all of it. Three unstructured hours between classes and a paper due in four weeks require you to generate structure yourself.

That's why a student who did fine before can struggle here without anything else having changed. The demand went up; the scaffolding went away.

    Willpower is the wrong lever

Trying harder works for one week. It fails in week six, during midterms, when you're short on sleep — exactly when you need it most. Systems that live outside your head keep working when your energy doesn't.

What building the skills looks like

Concrete plans instead of intentions. Environments that make focus the default rather than a fight. External accountability, so starting isn't a private negotiation with yourself. Regular review, so the system adapts instead of quietly failing.

That's the work we do in coaching and in our accountability sessions in Athens: not more effort, a better setup.
